Sun-Kissed to Sun-Smart: Repairing Summer Skin Damage

Sun-Kissed to Sun-Smart: Repairing Summer Skin Damage

Summer asks a lot of your skin. Long days in the sun, salty swims, sweat, sunscreen, and then the shift into cooler weather at the other end of it.

This guide covers the whole arc: how to protect your skin while the heat is on, and how to replenish and care for it once summer winds down.

Why Summer Skincare Is Different

Summer brings sunshine, higher temperatures and often more time outdoors. Heat, swimming, sweating and increased sun exposure can all change the way your skin feels and what it needs.

And while we love a New Zealand summer, UV exposure is something we need to take seriously.

Adjusting your skincare routine can help keep skin hydrated, comfortable and supported, but skincare is only one part of the picture. Good sun protection is essential.

Protecting Your Skin Through Summer

Always use SPF

Sunscreen is your summer skincare MVP.

In New Zealand, choose a broad-spectrum, water-resistant SPF 30+ and apply it generously. Reapply at least every two hours while outdoors, and more often after swimming, heavy sweating or towel drying.

And remember the areas people forget: ears, neck, lips, hands, feet and exposed scalp.

Sunscreen isn't the only line of defence either. Shade, clothing, a broad-brimmed hat and sunglasses all matter.

Seek shade when UV is high

Rather than relying solely on the clock, pay attention to the UV Index. In New Zealand, sun protection is recommended whenever the UV Index is 3 or above.

Shade, protective clothing and timing outdoor activities carefully can all reduce your UV exposure.

Antioxidants can support your skincare routine

Antioxidants such as vitamin C are popular additions to daytime skincare because they can help protect against oxidative stress.

But they don't replace sunscreen.

Think of antioxidants as part of your skincare routine, not permission to spend longer in the sun.

Switch to lighter textures if your skin prefers them

Some of us prefer lighter skincare when it's hot and humid.

Our Hydrating Gel Toner and Brightening Face The Day Crème make a lovely summer morning pairing, providing hydration without needing layer upon layer of product.

But your own skin gets a vote too. If it still loves a richer crème in summer, that's absolutely fine.

Adjust your cleansing

Sweat, sunscreen, makeup and the general grime of a summer day can build up on your skin.

A thorough but gentle evening cleanse is particularly important when you've been wearing sunscreen. If you double cleanse, keep both steps gentle and pay attention to how your skin feels rather than assuming more cleansing is always better.

The same goes for exfoliation. If your skin is feeling sensitive, dry or sun-stressed, this isn't the time to scrub harder.

Keep sensitive skin calm

Heat, sweat and sun exposure can leave sensitive or reactive skin feeling particularly unhappy.

This is where gentle, barrier-supporting skincare comes into its own. Kōakaheart™ is naturally rich in essential fatty acids, while botanicals such as kawakawa are included in Hark & Zander formulations for their soothing properties.

And if you're prone to clogged pores, remember that “non-comedogenic” isn't a guarantee that a product will suit every skin. Formulation, concentration and your individual skin all matter.

Looking After Your Products in the Heat

Summer heat isn't particularly kind to your skincare either.

  • Store products somewhere cool and dry. Avoid windowsills, direct sunlight and hot cars. Excessive heat and light can affect the stability of some skincare ingredients.

  • Check consistency and smell. If a product has changed significantly in colour, texture or smell, check its expiry or period-after-opening information before continuing to use it.

  • Don't assume everything belongs in the fridge. Unless a product specifically says it should be refrigerated, store it according to its directions. A cool gel toner might feel lovely, but refrigeration isn't automatically necessary or better for every formulation.

  • Keep lids and caps closed. This helps protect your products from unnecessary exposure to air and contamination.

  • Keep things clean. Use clean hands when applying skincare and avoid introducing water into jars or containers.

Caring for Your Skin After Summer

As summer winds down, your skin may be feeling drier, more sensitive or simply ready for a little extra care.

We can't undo UV damage with skincare, but we can support hydration and the skin barrier, address the appearance of uneven tone and, most importantly, keep protecting our skin from further UV exposure.

1. Rehydrate and replenish

Sun, heat, swimming and air conditioning can all leave skin feeling dry or tight.

If your skin needs more nourishment as the weather cools, introduce richer moisturising textures or a hydrating face oil such as our SkinTonic to help soften the skin and support its barrier.

And don't forget the rest of you. Our Nourishing Body Oil is a lovely way to nourish dry skin on arms, legs and anywhere else summer has left feeling a little parched.

2. Soothe sun-stressed skin

If your skin feels irritated, sensitive or looks red after being in the sun, simplify your routine.

Soothing and hydrating ingredients such as aloe vera can be helpful, while strong exfoliation and introducing multiple new actives may simply add more irritation.

And if you're actually sunburnt, that's different from ordinary post-summer dryness. Get out of the sun, cool the skin and treat the burn appropriately. Significant blistering, severe pain or concerns about a burn deserve medical advice.

3. Support brighter, more even-looking skin

Uneven pigmentation and sunspots often become more noticeable after summer.

Ingredients such as vitamin C can be useful in skincare designed to support brighter, more even-looking skin. Gentle exfoliation may also help with surface dullness if your skin tolerates it.

But established pigmentation isn't something we promise to erase with a skincare product.

At night, a restorative night crème can provide additional hydration and nourishment while you sleep.

4. Support your skin barrier

UV exposure and other summer stresses can affect normal skin barrier function.

Fatty acids and nourishing plant oils can help support that barrier and reduce moisture loss. Our Kōakaheart™ oil is naturally rich in essential fatty acids, while ingredients such as squalane are useful emollients that help soften and condition the skin.

Gentle cleansing matters too. If your skin feels tight or stripped immediately after cleansing, it's probably trying to tell you something.

5. Keep up the SPF

Summer ending does not mean sunscreen goes back in the cupboard.

UV radiation doesn't disappear when the temperature drops. In New Zealand, check the UV Index and use sun protection whenever it reaches 3 or above.

Protecting your skin from further UV exposure is far more effective than trying to “repair” the effects afterwards.

Hydrating from the Inside

What you eat and drink contributes to your overall health, and that includes normal skin function.

  • Water-rich fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, cucumber, oranges and strawberries contribute to your overall fluid and nutrient intake.

  • Healthy fats from foods such as chia seeds, walnuts, avocado and oily fish provide essential fatty acids.

  • Fruit and vegetables containing vitamin C contribute to normal collagen formation.

But you don't need a special “skin hydration diet”, and we'd be cautious about recommending supplements simply because the seasons have changed.

If you're considering collagen, omega-3, vitamin E or other supplements, particularly if you have a health condition or take medication, it's worth discussing whether you actually need them with an appropriate health professional.

A few simple habits can help dry skin too. Long, very hot showers can be drying, so choose warm rather than scorching water. Applying your moisturiser soon after bathing can help trap moisture in the skin.

A DIY Body Scrub Worth Making

We love a little DIY, but there's one important caveat here.

Don't exfoliate skin that is sunburnt, irritated or particularly sensitive.

For healthy body skin that simply feels a little dry or rough, you can blend our Nourishing Body Oil with fine sugar to make a simple body scrub.

Massage it very gently over damp skin and rinse away.

No aggressive scrubbing required. Your skin isn't a kitchen bench.

Summer Skincare Questions

Q: Can I skip moisturiser if my skin feels oily in summer?
A: You don't necessarily need the same moisturiser year-round, but oily skin can still benefit from hydration. If your usual crème feels too rich, try a lighter texture rather than automatically skipping moisturiser altogether.

Q: How often should I reapply sunscreen?
A: In New Zealand, current guidance is to reapply sunscreen at least every two hours while outdoors, and more often after swimming, sweating or towel drying. Always follow the directions on your sunscreen too.

Q: Are natural ingredients effective for summer skin?
A: Natural doesn't automatically mean better, safer or more effective. We choose ingredients including Kōakaheart™, kawakawa and marine and botanical actives because of what they contribute to a carefully formulated product, not simply because they're natural.

Q: What about my lips and under-eyes?
A: Don't forget them. Use an SPF lip product and protect the eye area with appropriate sunscreen, sunglasses, a hat and shade. Be careful not to get sunscreen in your eyes.

Final Thoughts

Going from sun-kissed to sun-smart is really about protection first, care afterwards.

Adjust your skincare as the seasons change, support your skin barrier when it feels dry or sensitive and keep your routine gentle when your skin is telling you it's had enough.

But above everything else, protect your skin from UV.

Because while we can nourish dry skin and improve the appearance of some of the changes summer leaves behind, no skincare crème can undo sun damage.

And prevention really is better than cure.
